Prioritise Sustainability With These Eco-Friendly Commercial Refurbishment Ideas

Posted by Virgil Nguyen

Prioritising sustainability across commercial refurbishment projects has been best practice for many years now, but it isn’t just about following design trends, and it certainly doesn’t stop once the refurbishment is complete.

It requires you to make the sustainable choice at every stage of the project, from the materials that you pick to the fixtures that you install. Doing so will benefit not just the environment but also your business, so if you’re looking for ways to make your refurbishment as eco-friendly as possible then you’ve come to the right place!

Read on for everything you need to know about planning your project, including our top tips on what to include and the national sustainability targets to keep in mind.

Energy-Efficiency & Sustainability In Commercial Refurbishments

Planning a sustainable commercial refurbishment comes with a long to-do list, and right now ‘improving energy-efficiency’ is at the very top for all 2026 projects.

UK Net Zero Target (2050)

As of this year, the UK has less than 25 years to reach its net zero target which is currently in place for 2050. This includes reducing emissions, cutting back on energy consumption, and switching to more renewable sources of energy, and every sector has its part to play – including yours.

To comply with these upcoming standards, now is the time to check that your premises are on track to meet them, and to take steps to reduce its carbon footprint if not. However, whilst 2050 is still many years away, there is a more pressing concern that requires your immediate attention.

Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) (2027)

Sustainability and energy efficiency have always gone hand in hand and currently all commercial properties must meet a minimum EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of at least E before they can be leased. This standard has been in place since 2023 to prevent energy-inefficient buildings from being used for business operations, but in 2027 this minimum EPC rating will be increased again to Band C.

This change has been made in accordance with the Net Zero Review, which also recommends that the minimum threshold be raised again to Band B in 2030. If you are worried about the energy performance of your commercial property, and are keen to address this in your 2026 refurbishment, then we recommend incorporating the following solutions into your project plan.

Key Sustainability Ideas For Commercial Refurbishment Projects

Here are the top 5 ways to keep sustainability at the forefront of your upcoming project:

1. Prioritise Natural Light

Since sunlight is a limitless natural resource, using it within your design is a great way to cut down the amount of artificial light needed to illuminate your workplace.

If you are planning a full fit-out, then take this opportunity to install large floor-to-ceiling windows. Or, if your project doesn’t have the room or budget for new windows, then make the most of the light coming in by installing glass partitions and rearranging the layout until there is nothing blocking the light from entering the space.

2. Improve Facilities

Even if your team is onboard with using energy sparingly, you’ll be amazed by how much energy is wasted by outdated equipment and systems. The best way to tackle this is to opt for fixtures and facilities that consume less energy in the first place.

Making this switch can be as simple as opting for LED lights, which use up to 90% less energy than other options, or as ambitious as installing water-efficient plumbing fixtures. To further improve the long-term sustainability of your project you could also retrofit your existing systems, rather than installing new ones, to cut back on the construction impact.

3. Upgrade Insulation

Whilst poor insulation will bleed heat during the winter months and cause a spike in your energy consumption, upgrading it will ensure your building retains heat in even the coldest conditions.

Invest in commercial insulation for the walls, roof, and floors as needed, and work closely with your contractor to create a reliable thermal barrier. This will minimise heat transfer year-round and reduce the pressure on the temperature control systems whilst also maintaining a more comfortable work environment for your team.

4. Switch to Renewable Energy

If you have the means to transition to renewable energy sources, instead of depending on outdated ones, then this will vastly improve the environmental impact of your future operations.

Generating your own power gives you an invaluable degree of energy independence, but this will depend largely on the size and location of your premises (for example, solar panels require a large, flat roof). If this is not feasible for your project then you still have many options, including installing sensors to monitor energy consumption or automatically turn off lights in empty rooms.

5. Partner With A Sustainable Contractor

Find a partner who shares your commitment to sustainability, and who prides themselves on their eco-friendly refurbishment services, for a project that you can be proud of. Partnering with such a contractor will support your sustainability efforts from the very beginning, as they will be able to recommend the best green strategies for the initial brief and will know how to implement them.

Once the refurbishment gets underway, their clear understanding of sustainable practices will ensure that the project is carried out in a responsible manner, from the use of reclaimed furniture, to the recycling of commercial waste in line with sustainable waste management guidelines.

Sustainable Commercial Refurbishment Services

From opting for recycled materials to installing energy-efficient lights, refurbishing a property with sustainability in mind will:

  • Reduce the carbon footprint of the project, and of your business.
  • Lower your energy usage (and the associated costs).
  • Improve the energy efficiency of your building.
  • Prevent excess construction waste.
  • And benefit the environment.
